What is the Motability Scheme?

Discover more about Motability and how it helps disabled people become mobile

Motability is a car scheme that enables people with disabilities become independently mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to cover the cost of leasing a brand-new car. Anyone receiving a mobility allowance is eligible for Motability and allowances can be used, in part or in full. The Motability package includes not just the cost of the car but also any special adaptations that may be required plus a host of other benefits covering everything you need to enjoy life on the roads, aside from fuel. The additional benefits include:

  • A new car every 3 years
  • RAC roadside assistance
  • Insurance for the customer & two named drivers
  • Any servicing and maintenance required
  • Annual car tax
  • Replacement tyres from Kwik Fit
  • A range of adaptations at no extra cost (more complicated adaptations may require payment).

The Motability scheme can be advantageous to participants, even if you aren’t able to drive yourself, as the scheme allows for up to two named drivers to be added to the insurance. Just nominate a relative, carer or friend as a named driver and they can then use the Motability car on your behalf, however, the car must be used for the benefit of the disabled person. This does not mean that the disabled person always has to be in the car for every journey, in practice the named drivers can use the car for shopping or other activities, so long as the Motability scheme customer will benefit. Find out whether you are Eligible for a Motability package from Brindley.

Getting Started

How Do I Exchange My Mobility Allowance For A Motability Car?

  • If you are eligible and receive a mobility allowance, and you wish to use this to lease a new car, simply Contact your Local Brindley Dealership all of which have a Motability partnership.
  • You’ll be assigned a Motability advisor to talk you through the process.
  • Your Motability advisor will be happy to listen to your requirements, budgets and personal tastes and suggest some cars suited to you.
  • Once you’ve decided which car you would like and if there are any adaptations you need fitting ahead of your lease, your personal Motability advisor will place the order.
  • If the vehicle costs more than the allowance covers, a single advance payment will be required at this point. There is financial help available for those whose disability requires a more expensive car which requires an advance. Our team will be happy to help advise on how to apply for this.
  • Once you’ve placed the order your Motability advisor will give you a unique pin. They will let you know when your car is ready and at that point you can pick it up and drive away with everything taken care of.
