As part of the government-backed Motability Scheme, we’ve been able to help thousands of people with a wide range of disabilities – and their families – get around with ease.

And as the public become more aware of the effects that driving can have on the environment, we’re delighted to be able to offer a range of electric and hybrid cars for those wanting a greener driving experience.

Wondering what electric cars are available are on Motability? Below we’ll take a look at some of our most popular models, as well as the Motability EV cars which are appearing on the scheme for the first time, for you in more detail.

Hyundai IONIQ 5

Touted by the South Korean manufacturer as “breathtakingly beautiful and amazingly advanced” (and we’re inclined to agree) the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a fast-charging, futuristic-looking car that’s got space to spare. Inspired by concept car designs, it definitely looks the part outside and in, but this is by no means all style, no substance.

With plenty of room inside, and a generous boot, the Ioniq 5 is also the first Hyundai to use the manufacturer’s all-new Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), providing faster charging, longer ranges, and improved handling. Plus, with a host of safety features, including warnings and directions projected onto the road ahead, Driving Assist, and 360-degree camera views for improved parking, you’ll stay safe and in control at all times.

Hyundai KONA EV

Big on range, the Hyundai KONA EV is a long-distance dream, capable of driving 300 miles on just a single charge through its 64kWh model. And with a 100kW charger, it can achieve up to 80% capacity in just 47 minutes. Basically, range anxiety is no longer an issue with the KONA.

The driving position is nice and high, and it’s a nippy town car thanks to power that’s available from the second you press the throttle. And thanks to the small size, navigating narrow streets is a breeze too. Throw in automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance and an emergency call system, and you’ve got an electric car that performs and performs.

Kia Niro EV

The family favourite in a fully electric form, the Kia Nero EV boasts plenty of features across its trims. Even at the entry-level 2 model, the Nero EV is stuffed with climate control, keyless entry and adaptive cruise control, while the level 3 trim adds heated front seats and wireless phone charging too. What’s more, the 475 litres of boot space means plenty of space for your road trip and holiday cargo.

Its automatic transmissions and light, accurate steering keep journeys easy and breezy, even at speed around corners. Plus, with lane keep assist, lane follow assist and highway assist, you and your family are the best of hands wherever it is that you’re travelling to.

MG4 EV

Simply put one of the best electric cars you’re likely to find, the MG4 EV has earned some rave reviews – and it’s easy to see why. Even as a budget option, the MG4 doesn’t skimp where you think it might. With an attractive price point, low day-to-day running costs and very speedy charging capabilities, it’s a car that impresses, even compared to other zero emission SUVs from the big names.

What’s more, it’s heaps of fun to drive too – a point that hints at MG’s sporty past, if that’s something you’re looking for. Steering stays smooth, bumps are softened thanks to its pleasing suspension and even at mounting speeds, the MG4 stays more than stable since it’s based on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform – a high-end foundation the car sits on. Basically, the entire model is state of the art, without the price point you’d expect from such a car.

MG5 EV

Available for the first time on the Motability Scheme, the MG5 EV is another value-for-money vehicle from the British manufacturer. A five-seat family car, it’s been optimised inside and out compared to the previous iteration, with a sleeker exterior and an interior upgraded with more tech. The interior is also more spacious than some of the MG5’s electric rivals too!

The second-generation model has been upgraded to feature MG5 Long Range with a larger 61.1kWh, which takes the single charge distance up 250 miles. It’s now also compatible with a 100kW charger, which gets you up to full charge in just 40 minutes. And with a raft of safety features, including lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assistance, you’ll get plenty of on-road reassurance whether you’re driving in town or on the motorway.

Nissan LEAF

Faster, roomier, more fun to drive and built to go farther than its predecessor, the new Nissan LEAF is a great entry point into the world of electric vehicles. Quick at charging, it’s more than ready for both weekends away and quick runs around town, and you’ll get plenty of tech for your money too.

Take the e-Pedal system, for instance. By boosting the resistance from the electric motor and driving using just the accelerator, you’ll drastically reduce the need to press the brake unless in an emergency. The result is smoother, lighter driving whichever road you find yourself on.

Nissan Ariya

One of the best-looking electric SUVs on the market, the Nissan Ariya is deluxe inside and out, with a futuristic exterior and an interior that boasts plush materials and two large infotainment-equipped digital displays. It’s nice and quiet inside too, with the light steering and smooth acceleration making for some pretty relaxing drives.

Scoring highly across NCAP safety testing, even at the base level you’ll get plenty in the way of safety features too. Nissan’s ProPilot syncs with the navigation system, so you know what corners, junctions and speed limits are on the way – great for longer journeys in places you aren’t so familiar with. As standard, you’ll also get driver attention alerts, cruise control, blind spot warning, emergency braking to avoid pedestrians and cyclists, and automatic high beams. Extensive just about covers it!
