Chery is a name you might have been hearing more often lately. They are a major global car manufacturer and have recently brought their range of vehicles to the UK. Despite being a new brand in the UK, the Chery brand has an acclaimed history within its home country of China.
Their flagship model, the Tiggo 8, is now available to test drive and buy. It’s a beautiful, large SUV that’s packed with the latest technology to make driving as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. If all that isn’t enough to keep you interested, wait until you find out how affordable it is.
The Tiggo 8 is a premium SUV designed for people who need a spacious, capable, luxurious SUV. The Tiggo 8 is ideal for larger families because of the two extra seats that can be folded up or down to give you either the added seats or an enormous boot.
There are two drivetrains available: the 1.6-litre petrol engine or the 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid that Chery is calling the Super Hybrid. The Super Hybrid has a combined range of up to 750 miles, with an all-electric range of 56 miles – ideal for the school run or commute.
In terms of size, it is about 4.7 metres long. This puts it in the same bracket as other large family SUVs, but it often comes with a much more affordable price tag. It feels solid on the road and gives you that high driving position that you may prefer.
It’s not a blistering quick car, but the Tiggo 8 will comfortably get you up to motorway speeds in under 10 seconds.
The design of the Tiggo 8 is meant to look sharp and modern. It sits on 19-inch alloy wheels that give it a real road presence, which instils confidence in the driver. It’s not just large, it feels spacious, in part, thanks to the huge panoramic sunroof that lets in oodles of natural light.
At the back, you will notice the distinctive rear lights that span across the width of the car. The lights help the car to stand out at night, as well as looking incredible. The lights are a bold contrast to the range of paint colours that are available, from black or white to more vibrant shades of green or blue.
Inside is where the Tiggo 8 really impresses. The main selling point for many, which sets it apart from most other SUVS, will be the seven seats. The middle row has plenty of legroom, and the two seats in the very back are easy to fold away when you do not need them.
The seats are finished in synthetic leather with diamond stitching, which gives the cabin a high-end feel you might expect in a car that costs twice as much as the Tiggo 8. If you fold all the rear seats down, you get a huge amount of boot space for trips to the tip or big shopping runs. Even with the third row up, there is still enough space for a few shopping bags or a small suitcase.
Whether you’re in a Sporty mood or a relaxing mood, the cabin’s mood lighting can be adjusted on the fly to match the style you’re looking for. You can match it to the colour of your vehicle, or you can go with something whacky, it’s entirely up to you.
Chery has put a lot of tech into the Tiggo 8 to keep the driver and passengers informed and entertained on long journeys. The dashboard is dominated by two large screens that handle your speed and entertainment. It even features a heads-up display, so the driver needn’t take their eyes off the road to check their speed.
One of the more interesting features is the Hello Chery voice command system. You can talk to the car to adjust the air conditioning or open the windows. This means you can keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel while making small adjustments to the cabin environment.
It comes with a Sony sound system to pump out those driving tunes, and there are plenty of USB ports in the front and back, so nobody runs out of battery during longer trips.
Safety is a high priority for Chery, and that’s no different in the Tiggo 8. The Tiggo 8 has earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating, which is the highest score possible. It is built with a great deal of high-strength steel to protect everyone inside if something goes wrong.
That should be a last resort, though, because of the suite of safety features included in the Tiggo 8. This includes things like autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assist, which are constantly working in the background to help you avoid accidents before they happen.
