Volvo has once again proven that even their best can be made even better with the reveal of the new and improved Volvo XC90. Volvo have taken everything that made the Volvo XC90 a standout in the luxury SUV market and they have enhanced it with a new stylish design, improved performance and state-of-the-art technology, making the new Volvo XC90 better than ever before.
A premium hybrid with electric benefits
The Volvo XC90 has long been known for its luxury, safety and versatility, and that remains on this new model. In its Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) form, the new XC90 offers more than 70 kilometres of fully electric range on a single charge under the WLTP testing cycle*. This means that for many drivers, their commute can be a pure electric commute, resulting in zero tailpipe emissions - therefore, reducing the new XC90's environmental footprint. In fact, Volvo data shows that around half of the distance covered by the latest plug-in hybrid Volvo cars is driven on pure electric power.**
And the XC90 has more power when you need it – for longer trips, the hybrid powertrain is paired with an efficient petrol engine to extend your range by more than 800 kilometres†. You can also opt for the full combined power of petrol and electric for constant all-wheel drive or off-road driving.
A new updated look
The exterior design of the new Volvo XC90 has been deftly updated to represent Volvo's ongoing transition toward an electrified future. This new design gives the SUV a more contemporary appearance, whilst maintaining its bold, confident presence that made it such a popular option in the luxury SUV market in the first place. A new front grille and slimmed-down headlights cap off the refreshed exterior design of this sophisticated, luxurious SUV.
Practical yet luxurious cabin
Arguably, the biggest news about the new Volvo XC90 comes on the inside. A renewed interior enhances practicality and brings our latest user experience, seen in our new EX90 and EX30 electric cars, into the XC90. The dashboard has been redesigned with a more horizontal shape with decorative panels made from premium recycled materials, giving it a modern yet eco-conscious feel. At the heart of the interior lies a larger, higher-resolution touchscreen infotainment display for an enhanced user experience, featuring a variety of apps, over-the-air software updates, and enhanced functionality / usability.
The practicality has also been improved in the new XC90 as a result of constructive feedback from current Volvo XC90 owners. The central console now houses additional storage space, an extra cupholder, and a more conveniently repositioned wireless phone charger.
Legendary comfort
The Volvo XC90 has always been known for its legendary comfort and the ride in this new model is now better than ever before thanks to its updated suspension systems. Each individual damper is now able to adapt mechanically to current road conditions to optimise both comfort and stability – for a more confident and relaxed driving experience. And if you want to go all in, the optional air suspension works together with an active chassis that monitors the car, road and driver 500 times per second to give the most comfortable ride possible.
Whether you desire easier entry and exit, improved aerodynamics at high speeds, or additional ground clearance for rough terrain, the air suspension allows the XC90 to adjust its height by as much as 60mm - lowering by 20mm or raising by 40mm. On top of that we’ve added extra insulation to certain parts of the car, which means there’s even less wind and road noise.
One of the safest cars on the road
As with all Volvo cars, the XC90 is one of the safest cars available on the market. It is equipped with an advanced safety cage, as well as a comprehensive suite of active safety features to help keep you, your loved ones and others on the road safe.
Its advanced safety features include radar and camera systems that detect lane drift and automatically steer the vehicle back into its lane to avoid potential hazards such as vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, or large animals.
Two powertrain options
In addition to the previously mentioned Plug-in Hybrid variant, the Volvo XC90 is also available in two Mild Hybrid versions - the B5 and B6. These are assisted by a 48v lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator which can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent in real-world driving. These Mild Hybrid variants make for a fantastic option for those are not ready to take the full leap towards electrification but still want to reduce their impact on the environment.
A balanced product portfolio
Alongside our new line-up of fully electric cars, the plug-in hybrid XC90 T8 remains a popular choice for our customers and an important car for us in terms of sales and profitability. Together with our fully electric models, plug-in hybrid cars like the XC90 and its siblings make up an exciting and balanced global product portfolio for Volvo Cars, providing a strong bridge to a fully electrified future.
This balance between fully electric and plug-in hybrids is the right portfolio for the market of today, as the premium fully electric market is still developing in several key markets. Plug-ins remain critical to our sales and profit growth plans over the coming years.
